Everything in school is online now. Let me reword that. Everything that parents need to know is online. The kids still have to haul around 50 pounds of books (no lockers). But grades, assignments, and other status issues are all online.
No online books but that is another post and I can’t do anything about it. I can’t. I can vote but that is about it.
But the teachers are excellent so I’m happy. The kids are happy. School is good this year with a minimum of drama.
Yes, it is like living in Lala land, but I’m going to enjoy it while it lasts.
One of my daughter’s best friends dyed his hair blue. That was fun. Bright brilliant blue. Everyone under 18 thought it was great.
So I’m writing this parenting blog and I don’t have any drama or problems to address. I’m sorry. The teens in my life are well balanced and relatively happy. I’m sorry again. I’m out of parenting ideas for today.
Of course there is still more to come in the wonderful world of parenting. There are broken hearts to come. There are hard classes to pass. There is drama that hasn’t happened. There are going to be sad and disturbing stories to come from school. But for now, just before Homecoming and Halloween all is quiet and all is well.
I savor this sort of quiet. It makes me proud to know that I’ve done a good job. And it makes me proud to know that a lot of other parents are doing a good job too.
So if your life with your teens is good give your kids an extra hug for yourself.
In the dark of the night I watch my kids, knowing that they are making good choices that will carry through with them for the rest of their lives. Early on when they were tiny I told them about consequences to their actions, the importance of having a good reputation and to not give in to peer pressure.
I also encouraged them to keep a good sense of humor and realize that everyone is different.
Maybe I can’t live up to all of that, and I haven’t always done that, so I can teach them through my experience, not to be like me in all ways. I want them to be better, and they are.
This isn’t a calm before a storm. It is just calm. And nice. So what will tomorrow bring? Who knows. But they’ll be prepared and so will I.
