Each Day She Vanishes a Little Bit More

Each day she vanishes a little bit more.

Each day she seems to get smaller.

Each day she moves towards an unknown place.

Today I went to see Eleora. She is older than…I don’t know. She just is. She has seen things I can’t even imagine. Even as a child her stories of old seemed old.

Tellias, who is also ancient told me she is seeing people. “Just yesterday,” he said, “she asked me who the two girls standing behind me were. Nobody was there. I asked her if she recognized them. She did not. Later she saw a man and a different girl. Sometimes she reaches out at night and speaks to those I can’t see. I’m not going to say they aren’t there, because they are. They’re breaking through and making sure she won’t be alone.”

Then his eyes watered and he wiped away a tear. “They aren’t ghosts or demons or anything we know. They are from there. They are the ones cats and dogs see when they look around a room at people we cannot see. They are waiting. They’re ready.”

“I know,” I said.

“You have strong feelings and they know it. When people you love pass you know it. You also know who is waiting for them. It has nothing to do with all of your other dealings with ghosts and things that dwell on this Earth. You have a connection with the beyond. You’ll know Juliette, when the time comes, who will be there with her.”

I didn’t breath in or out for a bit. “Why?”

“I don’t know. This is something I have never figured out, and those who claim to go in-between, or do go in-between won’t give me any answers. My heart will break into a million pieces but I won’t be able to stop it or pick them up, or fix it. It is like a pot hurling off of a cliff and I can only listen to hear when it falls at the bottom. Or a wine bottle, whatever feels right. She’d like the wine bottle analogy.”

“I will be here for you, always.”

“And I for you.”

We sat with Eleora, each holding one of her hands, as she slept with a cat curled up at her feet, and a faithful dog at the foot of the bed.
