If you’re visiting Vampiremaman.com, and especially if you like Halloween and Vampires, you’ll love the art of J. Harrison Kemp aka my friend Jason Kemp of Tenkara Studios.

I posted the first batch of Vampire Art of Jason Kemp earlier this month. Here is the second group. SQUEEEEEEEEE. OMG I love these SO MUCH. Thank you Jason. xoxoxox.

I have to stop for a second and admit in my cold Vampire heart that the top four images have my heart (especially the top two). Oh my goodness. Ask any Vampire. That said, the rest are utterly fabulous too.

Tenkara Studios are presently the sole domain of author and illustrator J Harrison Kemp, or Jason as the dust bunnies call him. Within the halls of his labyrinthine workspace, a sprawling Wunderkammer, or wonder-room if you will, we find the artist surrounded and overly influenced by the many intricate objet d’art of a bygone age, a multifarious miscellany of complex curiosities that only the foolhardy would call toys. Brimful but charming, the antiquated atelier is commingled with an athenaeum housing only the greatest of literary treasures and books about things from outer space. Yes, it is here that the self-taught artist and writer draws from his surroundings that little bit more everyday and applies that inspiration to new and ever evolving graphic and fictitious projects.

Jay is currently the sole inhabitant of Tenkara Studios, a.k.a. the office and is busy with a variety of commissions, short stories, incidental projects and a soon to be realized anthology of horror fiction.

Jason has also designed the covers of several of our themed anthologies for WPaD (Writers, Poets, and Deviants.) Yes, and I have to add I am SO HONORED to have worked with Jason. Wow. I love these covers. AND as a writer Jason tells a damned good story too.

Dracula Lives

IMG_3034

Oh the romance with Vampires. Who doesn’t love a well dressed blood sucking man coming into their bedroom in the middle of the night? Nothing makes you feel sexy like the scrape of a fang against your neck, or the sound of your heart beating with fear in your exposed chest.

Monster magazines and comics have always been, and always will be popular. My favorites are the Fanzeens – wonderful publications created by fans.

The artwork is absolutely beautiful in the fanzines and small craft publications.

Yesterday I visited my friend Steve who somehow ended up with boxes of monster magazines that he is now selling on ebay (super cheap thrills – priced to sell.) Of course I was immediately attracted to the artwork on these things. I’d frame a lot of this stuff. Just imagine a wall of eight or nine framed pieces in a square arrangement. Nice.

I’m just going to share a few so you can get your classic movie type Vampire fix (since you usually don’t get it here since I’m not that kind of Vampire, well, not usually.)

Hope you enjoyed the artwork.

This week more and more old monster, Vampire, Frankenstein, Aliens, Star Wars, and other related film magazines and comic books will go up for auction. All auctions start at $0.99. Yes, everything is going for cheap. There are also “buy it now” opportunities. Some of the descriptions are as good/fun as the magazines.

The seller is sfk1999. He usually specializes in watches, estate jewelry and other antiques, but lucky for us this week he has monsters and Vampires.

And today a couple of Peter Cushing autographs are going up for sale. Woo Hoo.

Click here to the link for one of the auctions then check out everything else he is selling: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Dracula-Lives-May-1975-12-Marvel-Monster-Group-Stan-Lee-Presents-/182065279100?hash=item2a63efb07c:g:UAUAAOSwxcRW84-r

If you’re interested in buying everything left in this huge stash Steve has (a lot hasn’t been posted yet on ebay) call him at his shop: Crown Precious Metals, Sacramento California (in beautiful East Sacramento.) (916) 456-6227.

Have fun.

Illustrating One’s Self – Vampire Maman Logo Sketches Round One

Last night my daughter said “Why don’t you make some Vampire Maman logos, you know like bands do.”

Good idea. What have I gotten myself into.

Fast Designs. Rule ONE – don’t spend too much time on anything or over think it. NEVER OVER THINK ANYTHING CREATIVE.

I made one quick sketch and outlined it with a fine point Sharpie. The Sharpie tip with thicker than I would have wanted and it wasn’t even the sketch I wanted but it was a start. The kids are too young and there are other assorted problems. Since I have NO attention span for anything that takes more than 10 minutes (make that 5 minutes) – I quickly scanned the drawing and took it into PhotoShop where I colored and tweeked it a bit into several different versions – a work in progress. I know how to use Illustrator but I don’t find it fun so I’m going to keep drawing by hand.

I tried a few fonts. This is far from done and not well thought out but like I said, it is a start. I’m not sure I like the image, but it is growing on me. Not loving the kid faces, but I can fix that and redo it and start over. No problem starting over on something I’ve only spent 3 minutes on (on the pencil sketches, add two minutes for the PhotoShop work etc).

I thought I’d better stop for now until I can get some paper with a decent finish, the right pens and do this up proper. I also should not do my drawings on the kitchen counter where water and other unidentified substances are on the counter and being soaked up by the paper.

But this is how I work and how the creative process, or at least my version of the creative process makes things happen.

When you are a mom, especially when you are a working mom, you have to make things happen FAST. FAST is the key or nothing will get done. OK not all of that is true – I use the kids as an excuse – it’s really my husband who eats up all my time (HA HA HA just kidding – they all do).

So I’ll keep you updated on my Vampire Maman logo ideas. By the way…I love to draw. More than almost anything. I just don’t spend enough time doing it.

The moral of this story…find time, have fun, that’s all.
