Wonderful Things My Husband Brings Me: Flora of Kansas 1886

Last week my husband, a dealer of antiquities and other interesting things, brought me a book of plants. This isn’t just any old book of plants – it is a book of real pressed and dried plants collected in 1886.

“Flora of Kansas, L.A. Spenser” is printed on each page label. There are lines for the collector (all blank) and the location. The location for all is Manhattan. For those who are geographically curious, this is Manhattan, Kansas. There is a university there. I’m sure there is a connection with either that or another institution of higher learning in Kansas.

So, while I continue to do research on the subject, I’m posting photos of this wonderful collection. There are a lot of pages so this is the first of several posts on this topic. The plant samples are exceptionally interesting and beautiful. I hope by sharing this others will also do research on the subject, or at least enjoy the plant forms shown here.

If you know anything about this collection or other collections like it, or L.A. Spencer leave a comment or contact me at juliettevampiremom @ gmail dot com.

Stay curious,

~ Juliette
