A Bit of Magic

Bulbs are magical things which hold the promise of spectacular blooms that nothing can rival. You might say a rose, but that is another post for another day.

People often speak of what their favorite guilty pleasures are. Chocolate? Books? Cat memes? Goat Yoga classes? The list is endless. One of my favorite guilty pleasures, and I dare use the word “addictions” is bulbs.

Out in my yard the first purple winter iris are blooming, along with paper whites, and fragrant hyacinth bulbs. Inside is a different sort of bulb altogether.

Inside are the amaryllis bulbs. Before I go on, I must admit that I also grow these huge flowering bulbs outside in my front yard. In the late spring not a person walks by without stopping to see the three to almost four foot tall spikes with huge red flowers. Sometimes there are six or more flowers per stem. Later in the summer some of the smaller white and red amaryllis might bloom. The smaller ones bloom at random times, as well as the potted ones on my back deck.

Back to inside. This is where the the amazing winter blooming inside show goes on. This year I opted for pinks, with one glorious double red that was given to me as a gift.

Amaryllis are so easy to grow, and so rewarding. Eventually all of the ones shown in the photograph here will go outside, or be brought back inside next winter. They’ll all bloom again, or at least they bloom again about 80% of the time.

Yes, even the most light adverse Vampire, or most heavy handed Werewolf can easily grow and enjoy amaryllis bulbs. We all need beauty in our lives and there is no better way than with a flower bulb.
