A large feline visitor

Bobcats are usually shy creatures, but today one was walking behind my house down the hill towards the creek. It was about 7:30 pm and the sun was still out. I was out because I was putting a few apples out for the buck who comes around. Some say I shouldn’t be doing that but everyone else does, and it is over 100 degrees F outside, and even in the dead of winter I leave a few apples out for the deepr. I was out so late because by 7:30 the turkeys have usually roosted in the Digger Pine trees for the night and won’t be stealing the apples from the deer. About twenty minutes later the bobcat was walking along the fenceline. Bobcats don’t like apples as far as I know.

I called to my husband Teddy to come take a look at it. We went out on the deck, leaving both of our cats, and our dog inside. The bobcat walked along, then stopped and looked at us. There was no fear at all. Why should it there be. Maybe it was wondering if I’d left out any dog or cat food, or dogs or cats.

A few nights ago my cat Sterling spent the night outside. I wondered if something had frightened him out there on his own. Since then he has wanted to stay inside. Sterling must have seen the bobcat. Their faces are the same – gray tabby stripes – but the bobcat is much larger and could take my 11 pound 8 ounce tabby cat down with one swipe, or one bite to the neck.

The battery had gone dead on my critter cam so I didn’t get any pictures. It is charging now, so maybe tomorrow.

Tonight the cats are inside, playing and grooming each other. They’re always where I am. In fact right now one, Dash the black kitten, is sitting next to me making biscuits. We have so much biscuit making between my two kitties that I should open a bakery. They will be staying in more, and only go outside when escorted by me or my husband. I know the dog keeps most animals away, but I can’t trust her to protect the cats.

Right now the only ones out by my fence are ghosts, and maybe a few skunks. I will be less inclined to walk along the fence with my cat in the future.

So bobcats. Elusive and beautiful, long legged, short tailed, bobcats.

  1. WOW! It is amazing how sometimes wildlife will just stroll on through neighborhoods, but only if they feel like no one will threaten them or cause trouble. Hope you get some good critter cam shots. Would love to see this handsome creature.
