Simon sat back at his desk. He watched the clock. Right on time Annie came in.
“Olivia was in Allegory,” she said, anger in her voice and on her face.
Simon answered her calmly. “It was imperative that Alexander bring her there to show the population that he means business when it comes to the equality of women.”
“You lied to her.”
“I simply omitted information.”
“You’ve changed Simon. Ever since Alexander became involved with Princess Candi, you’ve become almost ruthless. What is going on?”
“Alexander promised me Olivia would be safe and so she will be. He is a man of honor and a man of his word. Don’t worry about Olivia. She can take care of herself.”
“She’s not well.”
“She’ll be fine.”
Annie leaned against the desk, “No Simon, she’s gone downhill over the past few months.”
Simon was about to use the excuse that Olivia was just over extending herself as usual but then thought better of it. No his friend had gone downhill.
Annie kept going. “How long do you think she can keep it up. The last thing she needed was the pressure of going someplace where they want her dead.”
“I can’t do anything about it now. No doubt Olivia is safe and sound in Alexander’s arms.”
“Simon, he’s bethrothed to Candi.”
“Not yet. He’s free to find love in the arms of any woman he wishes to be with.”
“The last thing she needs is Alexander’s attentions.”
“Maybe it’s exactly what they both need. Come on Annie, think about it.”
“You sent her on this trip in order to get Alexander laid?”
“No, that isn’t what I said.”
“Look what happened when you fixed her up with your friend Richard Long. He used her, then threw her away. She loved him and he stabbed her in the heart. What makes you think Alexander won’t do the same thing?”
“Alexander would never use Olivia. He is nothing like Rich Long.”
“What if he kills her.”
“Kills her? Don’t be dramatic. Alexander would never …”
“No, not Alexander. You know who I’m talking about. The enchantment. Robert.” Tears welled up in Annie’s eyes.
Simon took a deep breath. “I won’t let that happen.”
“You can’t stop him Simon.”
Simon said nothing. Ellie had told him the same thing over and over. There was no way to stop the madman who wanted to own Olivia’s soul. Simon’s plans had gone horribly wrong. Now both of his friends were in danger.
