October is my favorite month of the year. Not only is my birthday in October, but the weather FINALLY starts to cool down, and of course HALLOWEEN is in October.
Even Vampires like October because we don’t have to hide who we are. I don’t mean we come out in public and show our fangs during the day, but it means we can celebrate who we are. Even if that celebration is quiet and private we owe it to ourselves. Seriously, you know keeping such a personal secret to yourself and to your community FOREVER can be taxing. It isn’t always easy. On the other hand, it can be hecka fun. No matter how you feel, celebrate who you are in October.
In my garden October is a time to plant bulbs to guarantee a riotous explosion of color starting in March.
October brings in sweater weather, and cool morning walks.
I haven’t even mentioned gourds yet. I will post photos in another post soon, but I planted gourd seeds this spring. Now the vines have grown up my orange trees and my trees are now full of gourds and oranges.
October also brings back the multitudes of tiny fall songbirds who like to hand out in my yard and around my neighborhood.
I often talk about art in this blog. What would October be without new art shows at galleries and museums. At the Crocker Art Museum in Sacramento the show “Modern Women / Modern Vision, Photography from the Bank of America Collection” starts October 2 and runs through December 31, 2022. At the Laguna Art Museum in Laguna Beach, CA, “Photography & Seduction: William Mortensen’s Laguna Beach” runs from October 1, 2022 and runs through January 15, 2023. Check your local museum and gallery listings for fabulous art shows in your area.
So whether you enjoy taking a bite out of a crisp new October apple, or a bite out of a cool October neck, have fun.

Stay safe. Be kind. Check in on those who are alone, elderly, or might need extra help. Hug your dogs and cats. Talk with your kids. And as always, kiss a Vampire (you’ll thank me for that bit of advice later.)
