It is going to be 102F at my house today. We’re driving up the hill to Reno where it will, according to weather.com be 95F today. Over the weekend it is supposed to be 105F in Reno. That is hot. On the other hand it is summer and that isn’t uncommon.
Contrary to popular belief Vampires can deal with the heat. We don’t sweat as much. We should keep hydrated. Sunscreen is a MUST, but the key is just to stay out of the sun. Good dark sunglasses help. Cotton clothing is helpful too. Give me a break we don’t hang out all the time in black formal wear, capes, and layers of Victorian clothing.
The heat gives us a good excuse to go to art museums, which are temperature controlled and always interesting. It is also an opportunity to catch up on reading inside while curling up in a favorite chair with a tall iced glass of blood and ginger ale (don’t knock it till you’ve tried it.)
I know a few Vampires who are going to the Peach Festival today in Marysville. There is also an Iris Show in Sacramento this weekend. You can go out my friends, you just have to bring water, find the misters, and be careful with the heat.
Remember when the steering wheels of cars were all hard material and we had to put covers on them to prevent burning our hands on hot days?
So what am I reading in the dark cool corners?
The Wager, A tale of Shipwreck, Mutiny and Murder. By David Grann
Between Pacific Tides – by Ricketts and Calvin
The Way of the Bear – Ann Hillerman
I’m reading Between Pacific Tides for reference but it is a beautiful book if you can find a copy.
Yes, I should be living on the coast. Now I’m among the oaks and the farms and the dry fields. I’m also close to the elders who need my help. They grow pears, or mostly pears, and other things on their farm. Or at least someone else helps them grow and harvest the fruit.
I have to check on them to make sure they’re staying cool and safe. I have to make sure they don’t talk to strangers or take out their old boat that has a hole in the bottom of it. Their neighbor and his son check in on them, but they’re not Vampires, which isn’t a bad thing, but you know how it is. I love them dearly and appreciate them checking in on my old folks.
So your assignment today is to check in on YOUR old folks and anyone else who might need extra help, need extra company, or just need a laugh. Yes, if I can make someone laugh I feel like I’ve done my job. I know I haven’t done that lately much on this blog, but I’ll get back to some funny stuff soon. I promise.
Stay safe. Stay cool. Stay hydrated. xoxox
