We didn’t talk much on the way to school because Clara was busy counting all the loose change that was on the floor and in the door pockets of the car. I kind of sort of listened to the radio but I don’t remember anything anyone said.
Clara had come downstairs earlier in jeans paired with a black lace cami. Yes, she had a flesh colored cami underneath the black lace one.
“Are you going to wear that to school?” I had to ask.
“What’s wrong with it?” Of course she HAD to ask, already knowing my answer. Or maybe she didn’t know the answer. I’d told her the black lace cami looked good a week earlier when she’d worn it to a party with a skirt and a cute little jacket. She told me that other girls wear things that are much worse.
Needless to say she changed into a My Chemical Romance Shirt (Black Parade – you know the one.) She still looked good.
The black lace cami had been part of a Halloween costume. We found it on the sales rack in the underwear section at Target last October for less than $3.00. Now and then it resurfaces as outerwear.
I thought about when I was her age. I was as fashionable as I could be.
This guy was in the news.
Of course presidential politics was up front and center. As always it is ugly and unfortunate.
There was a new phone out – and I mean NEW PHONE.
Things are a lot different now. But you know, some things just don’t change. Fashion, politics, celebrities, and technology are always in the news.
I didn’t mention any of my thoughts only teen years with Clara today. Sure I preach talking and talking and talking with your teens, but sometimes we can be quiet in our own thoughts. The feeling is there, even if we aren’t speaking at the moment.
My son wears a pocket watch and vests. Sometimes he puts on old fashioned hats as well. He can get away with anything with his mix and match of old and new. On the other hand, my daughter’s fashion is new. It is only new. That is ok. Both of their styles are ok. I’ll let them know when it isn’t, because I’m the parent so I can guide them when they are off the mark.
