You’re enthralled by the Roman Empire. Your favorite story of the time, be it about mere mortals or gods, is made into a film.

And as you watch your favorite book made into a movie or series you say to yourself, “What the fuck? Why are they all speaking in English accents?”
The movie isn’t British. Most of the actors aren’t English. In fact the cast is mostly made of of American, Canadian, and Australian actors, with maybe a few Germans, Irish, and English actors. So WHY does everyone in fantasy and Roman movies talk with English accents?
Take for example, the Lord of the Ring movies. Hobbits live in the Shire. They have their own accent. The elves speak elf language and so they should have a different accent. The dwarves should have their own dwarf accent. The big people humans should have all of their big people human accents from whatever kingdom they’re from.
Don’t give me any excuses. I speak the way I do because I’m from California. BUT my family and friends are from all over and have all kinds of different accents. Even if we all speak English the way we speak is slightly different depending on where we are from. So WHY does everyone in Fantasy Land and Roman Empire films speak with English accents?
Don’t tell me I’m full of shit and give me examples of why I’m wrong. For the most part, a majority of the fairy tale fantasy films and Roman Empire films out there. I’m right. Fight me. I am in no mood for anal folks right now so just agree with me and answer the BURNING QUESTION poll below.
About 6 months ago my husband and I watched a fantasy film (it was great but I forget what it was because, well, I’ve been distracted and my brain is full) and it was wonderful because all of the actors used their own accents.
