Sleep…and teens…and mornings…a poetic mess!

I remember a time, a long time ago, when we’d sleep during the day and night was our time.

Trying to be poetic here but my schedule is so messed up. The lament of the modern Vampire parent.  We change our schedule so they can go to school and learn to blend in. We blend in as parents. We blend in for our work. We sleep when we can.

Like I’ve said before, sleep has never been my friend. Sleep conspires with ghosts to torment me forever.

So you can imagine how difficult it is for me to get two teenagers up in the mornings and get them ready for school. Little kids are easy. Little kids are like puppies ready to bounce out of bed and run at full speed for hours on end.

Teens on the other hand…oh my gosh. It is like living with Zombies and even worse because they are Vampire Teens.

And at this point I have to stop because I have no answers. If I wake them at 5:30 am or 4 am or even 3 am they’ll take the additional time to move even slower. If they crawl out of bed at 6:30 am they’ll just move fast but then I have to spend 30 minutes yelling at them like some sort of insane sports coach.

They’ll change clothes an additional 16 times to get the absolutely correct combination of skinny jeans and black tee shirt. They’ll make sure every single hair is in place and check it again 10 more times. Then the frantic search goes on for shoes, books, papers, gym clothes and the list goes on and on.

Breakfast is in the car…no there are no more school bus service and it is too far to ride a bike (traffic can be scary).

Dogs and cats used to work to get them out of bed. A purring feline walking on the bed brought a smile to young faces. Now the cats want nothing to do with my teens in the mornings. The cats have been awake all night and can’t wait to eat and dash outside to hunt then find the perfect sleeping spot for the rest of the day.

Not that I’m complaining (but I am sort of). I wouldn’t change a thing. It is amazing how our lives change when we have children and we do things we thought we’d never do.  Despite the lack of sleep, I’ve never had a better time!
