You can’t go back.

When I was a child it seemed like someone was always touring around with a jar claiming to contain the head of Joaquin Murietta. People did all kinds of gross things for profit and entertainment.

I rarely think about the changes that have gone on since I was born. I never pine for “the good old days.” The good old days were not always that good. Sure some things were better but…time goes forward.

There is alway talk of time travel. There are those who ask “what if.” We can’t go back. All Vampires know that. As the ultimate time travelers we can only go forward.

As survivors we stay current. Seriously we don’t hang out in Victorian garb and let our old clothing rot off of us like corpses. We aren’t like those who are still wearing 1980’s mullets and bleached blonde perms. We’re current.

When someone asks “what if” I have no answer. What if someone hadn’t died? What if the South hadn’t lost? What if you had told him that you loved him? What if she’d fallen in love with you instead of him? What if you’d had boys instead of girls? What if you’d been beautiful?

You can’t go back. As for that last one, you can be beautiful. Beauty is just a matter of good style and the right lip gloss.

What if the Covid pandemic had never happened?

I don’t know.

We can’t go back.

We can only go forward.

We can’t relive or change the past but we can learn from it. Yes, we can learn from the past so we don’t make the same mistakes again and again and again. We can also learn from the past so we can continue to do the right things – the things that work.
