Begging and Other Undesirable Actions

I have 72 thousand contact updates on Linkedin and other messages in my email inbox tonight. I don’t even know why I have a Linkedin account. More useless junk to throw at me, and then attempt get information off of me like a Kentucky strip mine.

Since before the election (you know which one) I’ve been bombarded with emails from all sorts of interesting groups. They all ask for my opinion THEN they ask for my MONEY. It is a constant pleading and begging for money that is so distasteful that I feel like turning against it all.

I’m unusually annoyed at our new Senator for sending out polls and asking an opinion, but I really feel like all she wants is my money. Nobody wants to listen, but everybody wants to get paid.

As a parent sometimes I don’t know what to say. One does not want to say we live in a society where our elected government never listens, but hey, we all know they don’t listen.

Who the young folks DO listen to are teachers. Yes, they DO listen to teachers. We’ve been discussing the two-party system and our two ineffective parties. We’ve been discussing all the assholery and shit-for-brains behavior on both sides. We’ve watched how that in spite of our government (both state and federal) that we will survive…or at least most of us.

In darkened corners, and in the light, we must teach our kids to fight ignorance. We must teach them not to be followers but to be free thinking citizens. We must teach them to question everything. We must teach them to follow the rule of law, but if that law is unjust they must use the system to change it. We have to start at an early age too. It is never too young to teach your child to question, and research, and form opinions.

One thing that makes our country, The United States of America, unique is that we’ve always questioned our parents, our elders, our government, and forged ahead. There are those who would take us back to the good-old-days of discrimination and sexism and inequality. Fuck them. Seriously, they can fuck themselves, but then again they’re already fucked because of the backlash that is guaranteed to come in good time.

Vampires don’t live in the dark because light burns their skin. They lived in the dark because it is the best place to find easy prey. Teach your children not to become prey. Teach yourself not to become prey.

And no matter what kind of relationship you’re in, be if political, romantic, or anything else – don’t beg. It is so unflattering and will leave you high, and dry, and alone.

Women in history, religion and stupid ignorant people (let me rant a bit.)

Before you read the rest of this I want you to know that I adore men. I absolutely adore them… most of them. They’re lovely creatures. They’re fun. They have hair on their bodies. They’re men.

The following post is a hostile rant about hostile and ignorant people so if you want to leave right now I’m cool with that. More Vampire and parenting stuff will come your way tomorrow. Maybe even some cats. Maybe even romance, but not today.

I usually don’t write posts like this. In fact I never cover religion (aside from death) or political thoughts. But today I am, just because I feel like it. I can just see my number of followers dropping at a rate faster than mosquitos dropping from DDT in the 1950’s. Don’t do it – don’t stop following me. I promise I’ll be back to fun stuff tomorrow. Just indulge me a little.

Also, this is not a well researched paper or Master’s thesis. It is just me spouting out.

After writing the Pandora post a few days ago I was thinking about all of those “the girl did it” creation stories and myths out there.

Then I thought about the story of Adam and Eve. Oh please don’t even try to get all Sunday School on me. We all know these stories are not literal (anymore than most of my blog posts that teach lessons in life.)

There are serious flaws in this story. Adam and Eve were told NOT to touch the apple/fruit because it held knowledge. Knowledge is power. Keep the people ignorant, as in keep the knowledge to yourself, and you will have all the power.

So you put the apple out there. Then a snake comes and says “EAT IT.” Come on, snakes don’t have lips. They can’t talk. Blame it all on the snakes because they don’t have legs. Blame it on the creature who is different. OK it wasn’t really a snake, it was some creepy pissed off ex-angel asshole pretending to be a snake but still.

So Eve bites the apple and she gains knowledge. She suddenly realizes that she is naked. But wait – that isn’t a bad thing. That means shoes and accessories and great dresses in her future. It’s a beautiful thing. The human body is a beautiful thing.

Yes, just blame everything on the women. If that is the case then why the Hell are men so violent? Why do they fear and repress women in so many cultures? Why do they consider women property? Why are women considered less than human? Why do men go to war and kill each other and each other’s children?

I am not an atheist by any stretch, but most stories of the “first people” are full of stupid holes that can’t make any sense to anyone with half a brain. It is all about control. One half of the population wanted to control the other half. They made up these stories a long time ago. Modern men, real modern men are beyond this sort of silly and dangerous stuff.

There are so many examples cautionary tales of women being told what NOT to do then they turn around and do it. Well screw that. Maybe if they’d let women do what they needed to do and learn what they needed to do the world would be a nicer place. I’d open the box. I’d eat the apple. I’d drag those gold tablets out from under the bed, I’d crack the code, I’d look in the closet, I’d do all of that.

I’m not that impulsive. I’m generally a serious rule follower. Most rules are based in common sense. But there must be a reason behind the rule. Don’t hold out a tasty orange carrot if you don’t want something to come along and eat it, especially if the carrot makes them strong and healthy.

A great source of violence comes from the fear of knowledge, the fear of curiosity, the fear of change and the fear of women. It is also about the fear of sex and ignorance of sex. Notice how religious zealots of all religions – the crazy ones – are obsessed with sex. It is sick. They’re sick. All they think about is sex and women having sex and gay sex and all sex. And the first thing they do when they get a chance is to do something nasty in secret and in a way that will hurt someone. It is a story as old as Adam and Eve and their stupid snake friend. Those who rant against sex and call it evil are so unhealthy. In fact, they can’t even imagine healthy sex because their minds are so sick and twisted and evil and perverted.

And why do people follow these nut jobs? Because they instill a sense of fear and reward people for embracing ignorance. And they punish people for seeking knowledge. They reward people who are too weak and frightened to have their own thoughts – but then again isn’t it easier to have someone think for you.

There is no reason to assume the “man” is the head of the household or even in charge. Why should he be? Why should he get all the ulcers… but that is a different post. Why not just be people regardless of what you look like under your pants? Does it really matter if you sit or stand. Does it matter if you give birth to a child or not? No it doesn’t matter – so why are some people so intent on fucking up our world in order to keep King Ignorance in power?

I wish I knew so I could fix it. But I don’t think it will ever be fixed because Ignorance is so easy and seductive.

I always tell my kids not to be followers. You don’t have to be a leader but NEVER be a follower.

So what does this have to do with Vampires? Nothing. Vampires never embrace ignorance. That is why we love them so. I’ll get back to the Vampires tomorrow.

That’s all.

More than a chemical reaction…

The radio was on and we listened to a story on NPR about a woman who killed rats to see if they “saw the light” when they died. She said when things died their brains just showed light and memories of life because of a reaction in body chemistry or whatever.  She said it was due to the brain shutting down and having a burst of energy. She was quite analytical and unemotional about her findings. It was so cold and unfeeling and horrible – because I know that isn’t what is happening.

Think about it. What about someone who dies slowly compared to someone who is beheaded? I know that is pretty disgusting but it happens. All death isn’t the same.

My friend Kelly, a Regular Human friend, my best Regular friend and neighbor was listening with me. She was the other half of the “we” who were listening.

Kelly had this to say. “I’m not religious, but that has nothing to do with what I feel or more so what I know. I’ve had several people close to me die young and unexpected. Each time I knew they were dead before I was told. These deaths happened out of the blue but I knew. That isn’t their neurons charging. That is them telling me or some sort of connection being broken between two souls. You can’t explain everything. Some things can’t be tested or explained. Love and death can’t be explained away.

When my dad was dying, in the last hour, I knew someone was outside waiting for him. I knew who it was. It was his best friend who’d died years before. I knew he was out there. It wasn’t my dad’s family. It was the friend he’d had the most fun with. I didn’t see the friend with my eyes but I saw him in my mind down to the smallest details. I knew what he was wearing and that he was waiting and pacing. And he knew that I knew that he was there. We both knew that it would be fine. Don’t try to explain it to me or have me explain it to you.

Then on, I think Sunday I heard something on Radiolab about a guy who jumped off the Golden Gate Bridge and survived. Only 62 or 63 jumpers out of over a thousand have survived. And everyone who jumped said they changed their minds after they jumped. This guy talked about changing his mind as soon as his hands left the rail. I can’t get that out of my head. Life is more than just a bunch of cells and cell reactions. It is so much more.”

“You’ve never spoken of this before,” I said. “Not like you are now.”

Kelly sighed and glanced over at me. “It isn’t something I usually talk about. Just like people who see ghosts. People who see ghosts don’t tell anyone. It is only the fakes who write the books and make the con and shout look at me I’ve seen a ghost. People who see ghosts keep it quiet. And if you tell anyone they’ll think you’re crazy.”

“Have you seen any ghosts?” I asked her, wondering now if she would admit it.

“No,” she answered without anymore detail.

I looked out over her deck and in the woods behind our houses I saw the ghost standing there looking at me. I expected him to flip me off or make some rude comment like he usually does but he just stood and stared at me like he wanted me to say something, but I didn’t know what to say, then he vanished. I then realized that, even though she couldn’t see him, that he was there for her.

“I agree with you,” I said.  “We aren’t just a bundle of neurons and body parts and chemicals. That is a lot of it but…I know what you say is true.”

I didn’t come clean and tell Kelly about the ghost in the woods or the fact that I’m a Vampire, not yet. But that’s ok. We all need our secrets and just like the universe we don’t give them up easily.

No matter what happens, I feel that the love and spirit we share will always live on. And no matter if you’re a Human, a Ghost or a Vampire, you’re never alone.
