Halloween Musings and Coffee with the Ghost

This morning I was sitting out on my deck with my coffee and a book. It was 2 am so it was pretty quiet. Aside from one of my cats and a few glowing raccoon eyes in the field behind my house there wasn’t much going on in the way of company.

We’d all had successful hunts on Friday so the wee hours of Saturday was a time of rest. It was going to be a very busy weekend – the weekend before Halloween – so I took a break with just my coffee, my cat and me.

I was buried in the latest Nelson DeMille book, The Panther, when I heard a slight throat clearing. I looked up to find the ghost leaning on the deck rail.

“You know”, he said with his usual slight smile, “from tonight until Halloween people are going to be dressed us like us.”

“What in jeans and sweat shirts? Or in your case a black suit and messy hair?” I said.

“Like Vampires and Ghosts.” The ghost gave me a long impatient look while I sipped my coffee and stretched.

“I’m doing Día de los Muertos, Day of the Dead makeup. Two parties tonight.”

“You were a witch last night.” The ghost looked at me in disgust.

“Yes, and a very successful witch at that. I sucked more blood than any Vampire there.”

“I think I would have made a good Vampire.”

“Why is that?” I asked.

“I’m pretty good at being dead.”

“That you are, even if you are one of the most annoying creatures I’ve ever met, dead or alive.” I told the ghost and gave him a smile with a little fang in it.

“I’m charming, but you’re too cold blooded to realize it.” He smiled back with a little hate added. I could tell.

“Happy Halloween Juliette.”

“Happy Halloween…what is your name?”

“Nigel.”

“Happy Halloween Nigel.”

And as always he vanished into the night. Nigel. Who would have thought?

Illustrating One’s Self – Vampire Maman Logo Sketches Round One

Last night my daughter said “Why don’t you make some Vampire Maman logos, you know like bands do.”

Good idea. What have I gotten myself into.

Fast Designs. Rule ONE – don’t spend too much time on anything or over think it. NEVER OVER THINK ANYTHING CREATIVE.

I made one quick sketch and outlined it with a fine point Sharpie. The Sharpie tip with thicker than I would have wanted and it wasn’t even the sketch I wanted but it was a start. The kids are too young and there are other assorted problems. Since I have NO attention span for anything that takes more than 10 minutes (make that 5 minutes) – I quickly scanned the drawing and took it into PhotoShop where I colored and tweeked it a bit into several different versions – a work in progress. I know how to use Illustrator but I don’t find it fun so I’m going to keep drawing by hand.

I tried a few fonts. This is far from done and not well thought out but like I said, it is a start. I’m not sure I like the image, but it is growing on me. Not loving the kid faces, but I can fix that and redo it and start over. No problem starting over on something I’ve only spent 3 minutes on (on the pencil sketches, add two minutes for the PhotoShop work etc).

I thought I’d better stop for now until I can get some paper with a decent finish, the right pens and do this up proper. I also should not do my drawings on the kitchen counter where water and other unidentified substances are on the counter and being soaked up by the paper.

But this is how I work and how the creative process, or at least my version of the creative process makes things happen.

When you are a mom, especially when you are a working mom, you have to make things happen FAST. FAST is the key or nothing will get done. OK not all of that is true – I use the kids as an excuse – it’s really my husband who eats up all my time (HA HA HA just kidding – they all do).

So I’ll keep you updated on my Vampire Maman logo ideas. By the way…I love to draw. More than almost anything. I just don’t spend enough time doing it.

The moral of this story…find time, have fun, that’s all.

Being Different – Being Brave: 10/26 is Intersex Awareness Day

October 26 is “Intersex Awareness Day”

I bet most of you know someone who is Intersex and don’t even know it.

I bet most of you don’t know what “Intersex” really means.

Intersex:

This is from an article on Wikipedia:

Intersex, in humans and other animals, is the presence of intermediate or atypical combinations of physical features that usually distinguish female from male. This is usually understood to becongenital, involving chromosomal, morphologic, genital and/or gonadal anomalies, such as diversion from typical XX-female or XY-male presentations, e.g., sex reversal (XY female, XX male), genital ambiguity, or sex developmental differences. An intersex individual may have biological characteristics of both the male and the female sexes. Intersex was initially adopted by intersex activists who criticize traditional medical approaches to sex assignment and seek to be heard in the construction of new approaches.[4]

Enough of the science talk. I’m not an expert on this subject but a friend of mine is…

My brave beautiful friend Zollie says it better than any article I’ve read:

I am not disordered. I am perfect! I am the image of my great creator. And the CREATOR DOES NOT MAKE MISTAKES! My sex and sexuality is not disordered by any means. I am passionate and loving and sexy and I am ALLLLLLLL WOMAN. So, you so-called experts, quit saying I have a disorder! Because I don’t!

Zollie told me of the term Orchid Sisters to describe women like her. It is a beautiful term and fitting.

Intersex people look like everyone else. They act like everyone else. They fall in love, get married and are parents like everyone else. They are no different than the rest of us – just a little bit different – but we’re ALL different in some way.

Like I keep saying on my blog and off of my blog – We are all different. If we were all the same the world would be a stupid and boring place.

A Vampire Muses on Movies in Three Minutes or Less – Frankenstein (1931)

A Vampire Muses on Movies in Three Minutes or Less – Frankenstein

The morning started out when I went out to my car and it looked like something the size of a pterodactyl pooped on my car.

We all have those days where everything seems to go wrong or just stupid. That is doubly true when it comes to children. We’ve all had those calls from the school or wondered if our kids even have brains half the time. But all kidding aside (not really, we’re going to continue kidding)…

If you think you had a bad day just think about Dr. Frankenstein the day his monster/creation/kid got loose. All that hard work and … well you know the story.

Boy meets girl, boy decides to create life (he can do that with the girl in an easy and fun way but he’d rather make something out of reanimated DEAD flesh), Boy hires an assistant who can’t do anything right, assistant gets the wrong brain, Boy builds a giant man, giant creature man comes to life, assistant is an ass and scares the giant creature man with fire, giant creature man goes nuts and everyone in the village chases the monster man to an old windmill, burn it down and well…THAT my friends is on crappy day.

You know, Dr. Frank if you’d just married the girl and had a little monster the old fashioned way… But that doesn’t make a good movie.

So the point of this entry is to tell you that I had a wonderful time last night seeing the 1931 movie Frankenstein with the wonderful Boris Karloff! TMC is showing old classics on the big screen again at local movie theaters – not the art theaters but at regular theaters that we go to with our kids (check your local listings).

By today’s standards it was almost quaint. The story was a little clunky. The acting melodramatic (in the best way). But hands down it is still a great movie!

Boris Karloff gives the monster such life and expression! You are almost cheering for him and not the poor village people.

The one scene that just hit my heart though and was THE horrifying scene was when the father of the dead child Maria carried her lifeless little body through the streets. I wondered “Why couldn’t Dr. Frankenstein bring little Maria back to life?”  Another story perhaps.

I hate to admit it (not really) that I kept thinking of Mel Brook’s Young Frankenstein the entire time.  But luckily I didn’t think of the Warhol version until just now.

A lot of movie theaters are now playing some of the old classics and I urge you all to go check them out. The next show we’re seeing on the big screen is “To Kill A Mockingbird”. I can’t wait.
