Cocktails in an Alternate Universe with a Vampire Mom

My 16 year old son came home today with an A+ and a nice note from his teacher about an essay he’d written on an alternate universe.

He wrote about how he had his known life, and two alternate universes. In one he was living in England in a small coastal village. His parents were dairy farmers. He was looking forward to going to Oxford. In the other alternate universe he was a vampire. Go figure.

The teacher was impressed by the way he didn’t buy into the whole Vampire Diaries or Twilight thing, or even Dark Shadows. He wrote it with great sensitivity for a minority who feared their very existence if found out. She said he was a great talent with a mature and large imagination.

In the past I’ve been called into the office when one of my kids has mentioned vampire things at home.  My daughter told her preschool teacher that mommy and daddy drank blood. My son was busted in 2nd grade for threatening to suck the blood from a bully who was picking on smaller kids.  Actually I was proud of my son, and back in the old days…the real old days I would have let him drain that creepy little bully and his entire ignorant bully family dry. Shit heads.

But back to alternate universes.  It is that what if I’d done things differently. What if I’d made another choice? What if I’d known what I do now?

I could live in Georgetown and work as a spy. I’d go to the National Gallery of Art once a month. I’d dine on spies and diplomats. My hair would always be perfect, along with my nails and my clothes. My children would go to school at St. Albans. Presidents would call me for advice.

In one universe I wouldn’t be a vampire. I’d bake bread. I’d get a tan. I’d grow old in 100 years and pass away in my sleep.

Which leads us again to cocktail time….

Teddy’s Gin & Tonic Vampire Style

Two parts good gin (we use the kind in the green bottle)

One part tonic water

Two twists of lime

Two seasoned blood ice cubes (blood infused with juniper berries, rosemary, lime, lemon zest and frozen in cute little shapes)

Pour over a glass full of ice (normal ice made with normal water)

Stir

Let sit for about a minute to get it all nice and cold.

Enjoy.
